Colleen, having been a caregiver I can appreciate your dilemma. It is very difficult finding an agency that will meet the kind of need that your describe.

I'm wondering who you are caring for and what the care receiver's diagnosis is? Those facts might make a difference in the agencies that can offer assistance.

Thank you for your question and God bless you. I will be looking forward to your reply. --------- Mary Ann Ryan RN

Colleen, have you contacted the Alzheimers Association for assistance? They may be able to recommend an agency that can provide the very help that you need.

Most disease associations have a list of providers. You can save lots of time and effort by accessing their lists - which they keep available to the public. They also might provide other support for you.

Please let me know if I can be of further help. If you have contacted an Alzheimers associations and not received assistance, please let me know.

God bless you. --------- Mary Ann Ryan RN

Hello,

I am currently an employee at the Alzheimer's Association Greater Michigan Chapter and one thing I can say is you are not alone in your need. We have tons of calls everyday for the same resource you are looking for. If you call our Harry L. Nelson Helpline, we can give you lists of home care agencies in your area. Most will offer a "live in" companion and usually have a discounted rate for that, versus what you would pay per hour. Here is the number: 1-800-272-3900. I hope this helps. :)

I am so happy you found someone that was able to help you out. It helps tremendously when you can get someone in to help the caregiver. The caregiver's need a break as well!

Lisa, this is a good time to remind the caregivers out there that the mortality rate for those caring for loved ones is considerably higher than in the general population. It is important to be able to decrease stress whenever possible. Having help, if only occasionally, is very essential to the health of the care giver.

Thank you for your help. --------- Mary Ann Ryan RN
