Should you be worried about the Bird Flu?

Currently, the only way to become infected with the bird flu virus is to handle an infected bird.  If a bird is infected with the virus and is not properly handled, the virus can spread.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that there is no data to show that any one has contracted the virus from eating poultry that has been cooked properly.  Properly meaning that the internal temperature of poultry maintain a hot temperature of 165 degrees for 15 seconds.

Bird flu has recently been documented in Asia, Europe and most recently, British Columbia.  Steps are being taken to ensure that infected poultry do not enter the United States.  These restrictions are similar to the steps taken to ensure that Mad Cow Disease did not enter our food supply.

When in doubt, never eat food items that have not been cooked to its proper internal temperature.  Food items should never be eaten raw or if the juices are still red or pink in color.  While food items cooked thoroughly may not be to your liking, it is the safest and you are at less risk of contracting any food borne illness leading to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and the dehydration associated with these symptoms.

If you feel sick within 4 - 6 hours after eating something questionable, keep well hydrated and if necessary, seek medical attention.
