There are many details and complexities associated with Medicare Part D, the new prescription drug benefit.  To help alleviate some of the questions and challenges associated with enrolling in the new plan, some important dates and tips to keep in mind are listed below.

  • Individuals interested in comparing Medicare prescription drug plans can visit www.medicare.gov and are encouraged to call the Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) at (800) 803-7174 for assistance with enrollment.  Please note that there are more than 78 plans being offered, so comparison is encouraged.
  • November 15, 2005 was the first day that seniors will be able to enroll in the new prescription drug plans. Information on available plans is accessible through www.medicare.gov or by calling (800) 803-7174 for assistance.
  • January 1, 2006 is the date that Medicare prescription drug coverage begins for individuals who enrolled in a plan by December 31, 2005.
  • May 15, 2006 is the last date for Medicare-eligible individuals to enroll in a prescription drug plan without incurring a premium penalty.
  • individuals not currently enrolled in Medicare must be approved prior to enrolling in a prescription drug plan. Applications are available at www.medicare.gov.
  • Individuals with low incomes may qualify for extra assistance with paying for their prescriptions.  If you think you may qualify call your local social security office or visit their website at www.ssa.gov for more information.
  • Individuals already receiving Medicaid will be automatically enrolled in a prescription drug plan if they do not enroll by December 31, 2005 deadline (specific to individuals with Medicaid), but are encouraged to compare plans and enroll in the one that best meets their needs.
  • Individuals are encouraged to keep all Medicare paperwork in the event that there are discrepancies with enrollment or coverage.
  • Spouses are encouraged to check with each other prior to enrolling in a Medicare prescription drug plan as the plans may impact current retiree plans and alter coverage.
  • Individuals who travel should consider choosing a national prescription drug plan that will cover their prescription drugs when they are away from their homes.
  • All legitimate information regarding Medicare prescription drug enrollment will feature the “Medicare-Approved” seal. Enrollment cannot begin until November 15, 2005, and individuals are encouraged to enroll with a Medicare-approved resource, such as by calling the Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) at (800) 803-7174.
