Baby boomers are at that challenging age where, from one day to the next, they battle wrinkles and blemishes. 50PlusPrime spoke with Margot Kohler, an aesthetician with more than 25 years on the job, about what steps boomers can take to maintain healthy skin.

(1) What are some of the steps you suggest people take to maintain healthy skin as they approach age 50?

The most important skin routine at any age is a proper home care skin regimen in conjunction with routine facial treatments. As we approach age 50, repairing the skin through microdermabrasion and skin tightening is most beneficial. A professional skin care expert, or aesthetician, can help a customize a proper menu.

(2) I've read conflicting reports about sun exposure and its effects on skin. What are your thoughts about this?

The sun, as we know, has numerous healing effects but it is very important to use a daily sunscreen. Damage left by the sun is often permanent and cannot be reversed, even with the most sophisticated ingredients and formulations. With proper sun block protection, Physicians are now encouraging 20 minutes of sunlight daily for our body to:

  • increase blood circulation
  • improve digestion,
  • increase metabolism
  • stabilize blood sugar
  • convert cholesterol in the skin to Vitamin D

(3) Can I take proper care of my skin at home, or is it important to have an occasional facial or full body treatment to maintain healthy skin?

Taking care or your skin and body at home is not a luxury; it is essential. By using proper products, the skin will become hydrated, toned and balanced. Yet home care alone cannot bring the benefits of true spa treatments. For example, seaweed treatments to detoxify and re mineralize, hydrotherapy to stimulate and increase circulation, and intense ingredients found in spa facial treatments cannot be duplicated at home.

(4) Is drinking a lot of water essential to maintaining healthy skin?

It is essential to drink 4-6 glasses of water daily to replenish the organs, and the skin is the body’s largest organs. Also, using a topical mineral spray for both face and body helps to re hydrate. Hydrated skin is healthy skin. Spa treatments utilize massage techniques with proven ingredients to stimulate circulation, collagen and elastin production and new, healthy skin cells.

(5) I'm in my late 40's. It seems I wake up with a new wrinkle on some days, and a new blemish on others. How do I address this?

Our skin may change daily, monthly, seasonally; all with different outward effects.  Therefore, with the guidance of a trained aesthetician you will be able to nourish the skin with proper ingredients. Any products with protein benefit the skins collagen production. Alternately one should properly exfoliate to remove the outer layers of dead skin which leads to a dull, lifeless appearance.
