What constitutes good health?  Every day we are bombarded with information about disease processes and symptoms, but very little is said about the signs of good health.

Here are the characteristics that define a healthy individual.

First, a person’s appearance can tell volumes about how healthy they are.  If their hair is shiny, smooth and is not falling out and their eyes are clear and bright and their complexion is pink and firm, they are the picture of health.

Healthy folks seek out new adventures and challenges.  They recover quickly from setbacks, have a sense of humor, and are optimistic and good natured.  They are also in tune with their feelings and can express gratitude as well as identify when they need help to get through a crisis.  They are sociable, happy and at peace with themselves and others.

People in good health do not get easily fatigued, move without difficulty and do not suffer from muscle or joint pain. Their heart rates are regular and beat within a range of 60 to 110 beats per minute.  Their blood pressures are between 100/60 and 138/88.  At rest their respirations range from 12 to 20 breaths per minute and they breathe without difficulty or wheezing.  Their weights are normal for their height.  Their body temperature ranges between 97 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

Digestives systems of healthy individuals work well.  They have good appetites but don’t overeat. Their fasting blood sugars are in a normal range of  70-120mgm. They do not suffer from indigestion or heart burn.  Their stools are normal in color, regularity and consistency, being firm but not liquid or overly hard.  They urinate without pain and don’t have difficulty starting a stream.  Their urine is free from blood and mucus.

Sleep comes without difficulty and is restful.  The healthy awake refreshed and are not fatigued throughout the day.  They have good physical endurance and a normal sex drive.

If you are getting depressed reading this article because you fall short, rest assured that most of us are in the same boat.  Very few individuals are completely healthy.  Age, alone, often takes a toll.  But if you embody most of the signs of health than you are in good shape even if you are taking medications for a chronic illness.  The goal for everyone should be to try to maintain good health despite having a disease.  Even people suffering from a catastrophic diagnosis can strive to maintain a degree of good health.

Good health results from a good attitude and good health practices.   Adequate rest, a healthy diet, an exercise program, companionship and a calm, peaceful environment all help to insure that everyone can enjoy good health, at least to some extent.
